93 Metre Superyacht by Feadship
Client : gosling ltd
world renowned designer tim gosling approached margan following a personal recommendation. the brief demanded an upholstery solution of exceptional quality to complete his award-winning carbon fibre gosling marine range.
This prestigious project presented complex needs. Having previously worked with various companies Gosling Ltd felt that the upholstery was an area for improvement.
We met initially at our studio, Tim’s lead designers came armed with visionary drawings and some of the actual pieces that had been worked on previously. It was clear from the start that this would be a very special project requiring precise interpretation and leather work to the highest standard.
Our remit was to collaborate with Gosling’s designers in producing the furniture for the deck area on a new 93m yacht. The items included tub chairs, director’s chairs, dining chairs and sun loungers in a pure white leather decorated with distinctive turquoise piping detail.
It was critical that the leather would give us the elasticity we needed to achieve the complex shapes required whilst maintaining its beautiful appearance. The leather was going to be exposed to sun and sea and would therefore need to comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.
Meeting a challenge head-on
The client specified a leather from the USA but we felt this could be improved upon. We approached one of our specialist tanneries to source an alternative hide. However, the client was unsure and believed that it was ‘just leather’, so we offered a solution.
We suggested a pair of prototypes and offered to only charge for one. The first would be in the original American leather and the second in our beautiful IMO-compliant European hide. It was a no brainer. The finished article looked stunning and would give us the elasticity we needed.
Fine contours in Formula 1 materials
Working with carbon fibre can give many headaches but it gives such an exceptional finish that we had to approach this whole project with fresh eyes to achieve true perfection.
The Gosling range of furniture presents unique design features including compound curves and chamfered edges. Our leatherwork had to follow the lines precisely – a very difficult task, but we rose to the challenge and nailed it.
Throughout this project we met many times with the designers to ensure we were running to their exact brief. Together we fine-tuned each detail to ensure perfection from every angle. The project was completed on time, on budget and was met with delight by our client and ultimately the owner of the yacht.
The amazing tub chairs went on to win the coveted Bespoke Guild Mark from the The Furniture Makers’ Company.
