Client : Manufacturing by Design
we have a long and creative history with manufacturing by design, they create individual and beautifully hand-crafted, bespoke furniture and architectural joinery. m.b.d know they can rely on our team to create intricate leather and fabric upholstery when the highest standards are paramount.
Meeting with their Managing Director, Tony Juchau, back in 2016 he mentioned a potential project that required extensive leather and fabric seating for a major sporting venue in London. Ultimately this project would be time and budget driven but with a spotlight on quality. In the first instance we were asked for our input on various visuals of what the architectural consultancy, F3 Architects, had envisaged. At this point our designers started to work closely with the MBD design team to make the dream come true.
Honing in on the detail
To ensure the vision became a reality it was essential to focus on the detail right from the start, so together with Tony we met at the F3 offices to discuss the brief and understand the scope of the project.
Working from the initial CGIs we started to design the framework to the seating ensuring it could be sent to site, bolted together and dropped into place. As with anything that looks simple there is a lot of work behind the scenes.
Sourcing the very best Italian hide
The leather options initially suggested were not of a high enough quality to give our client the beautiful sweeping curves and longevity that we would expect on a project of this calibre. We made the journey to Italy for a meeting with our partner tannery with a view to sourcing the best quality European hides. We knew this would give us the elasticity we needed to work with and the quality of hide that this project demanded.
Proving the concept
Whilst all of the design was progressing we were commissioned to produce a full size section of a leather curved booth with extensive quilting to the backs. The sample section was produced in our Italian leather in a standard colour which was a very close match to the Tottenham team colours.

A presentation in velvet
Our presentation to F3 Architects was hosted at our own studio. Up for scrutiny was the full size sample section with exposed frames and various colour matched velvets for the fabric areas.
Decisions on fabrics, stitch detail, button, piping locations and general design tweaks were made and the full sample section was a resounding success. However, just a small niggle remained in the back of the Designer’s mind. Was there a way of changing the colour of the leather by one or two shades?
Going the extra mile
If this request couldn’t be done then we would receive sign-off on what we had offered – but, if it could be done then we would have a very happy client!
Working to a precise Pantone specification we supplied an exact colour match within two weeks and received the go-ahead to proceed. We selected over 300 beautiful Italian hides and had them dyed to our exacting colour palette and commissioned rigorous and essential fire-resistant treatments.
A labour of love
Having spent over eight months in the design process for the whole project we went into full production in early 2018. Due to the diligent planning and clear communication between all the design teams, every single section was delivered on time, on budget and without one single snag. Absolutely everything went to site and fitted first time.
From the VIP Areas we continued this high level of craftsmanship across the Chairman’s offices, the players’ bedrooms and the NFL Lounges.
